Just spotted this on twitter, this blog post by Jeff Teper –

is a must read for SharePoint 2010. It discloses a lot of the new features present in the new product with a few screenshots too.

What I am working on – Coming Soon

21 04 2009

Dear Readers,

I thought I would write a quick post as I haven’t blog posted for a while. I am currently working on some code to create list views dynamically in code using the SharePoint object model and will post an example up when I’m done.

Additionally I am currently customising the Cascading Navigation Web Part (http://www.codeplex.com/sharepointnavigation) that was created by Yvonne Harryman to add more rich functionality.

The Cascading Nav Web Part allows you to configure and display a drop down top menu on WSS sites (a feature that present in full blown MOSS). I will contact Yvonne to provide a new release with the additional content.

On a separate note, did everyone have a good time at the SharePoint Best Practices Conference in London, UK? I sadly could not attend but from what I hear there were some very informative sessions/presentations.

More to follow soon…

:-)

IntelliGantt

12 02 2009

hdr_logo I thought I would do a brief write up of Team Direction’s IntelliGantt product. We have been evaluating it for a while now and are impressed with the functionality.

IntelliGantt allows you to create complex project plans/gantt charts and upload these to your SharePoint/WSS Site. It will create the tasks associated with the project within SharePoint and assign the users. The project plan is visible from within the SharePoint site saving a fortune on MS Project Licenses!

Changes made in the SharePoint site and Visa-Versa will be reflected in the IntelliGantt software when the project is next syncronised. This way you could have one ‘Project Owner’ who creates the project plan and the project engineers will simply use the SharePoint site.

It works with both full MOSS and WSS and is really easy to use. They are currently offering a few different versions of the product – IntelliGantt Plus V3, IntelliGantt Beta V4 and an IntelliGantt add-in for MS Project.

Have a look at their website for more details – http://www.teamdirection.com/intelligantt/index.html

MOSS Stencils for Visio – Updated

5 02 2009

Hi Readers,

Whilst creating a Visio document this morning and using the WSS Visio Stencils, I noticed a few key stencils that were missing and could be quite useful. I’ve created these extra stencils and uploaded them into a new MOSS Stencils pack.

The two extra stencils are:

Planning SharePoint/WSS Site Structure

21 01 2009

This is something which I feel is often ignored when creating SharePoint/WSS Sites for the first time. It is also something which is not very well documented. When creating a WSS or SharePoint environment either to replace an intranet or just a small collection of sites, it is important to design and plan the structure first.

Failure to do so can mean a large messy structure which is then difficult to reorganise, this is made even more difficult by the fact that SharePoint/WSS databases are not the easiest to work with.

The most important things to consider when planning are:

  • Grouping of similar content – i.e.by Department
  • Site Navigation – How will the users navigate through the sites/subsites
  • Database Size – Which site collections require their own content database (on a separate web application)
  • Document Storage Location – Where will the documents/files be stored in the sites – document libraries? etc.
  • Permissions – Plan user permissions in advance, perhaps use a ‘Permissions Matrix’

In addition to the above points, a ‘best practice’ document should be produced governing the creation of WSS/SharePoint sites. This will help to control and limit the creation of sites unless they are completely necessary.

When planning the site structure a tool like Visio is essential, if you are using Visio be sure to look at the Visio stencils for SharePoint:

MOSS Stencils

Happy Planning (it will be worth it in the future!)

SharePoint Showcase 2008

20 10 2008

I was lucky enough to be able to go to the SharePoint Showcase at ICS Basingstoke last Thursday. ICS had organised a large number of SharePoint Vendors/ISV’s to come and present their latest SharePoint offerings, the vendors and their relevant software were:

  • K2 – BlackPoint Workflow Studio
  • Neverfail – Neverfail for MOSS
  • Quest Software – SharePoint Backup/Recovery and Administration
  • AvePoint – SharePoint Backup/Recovery
  • Tzunami – Web Content Migration
  • Metalogix – Web Content Migration
  • Bamboo Solutions – Web Parts for MOSS & WSS

I want to say a big thanks to ICS for organising a great event, it was great to get all the vendors under one roof to get a real demo of the products they are offering. ICS are planning to run one of these every quarter so check their website – www.ics.net for upcoming events!

There were even a few freebie giveaways, as well as the usual pens etc one company were offering free remote control helicopters! :p

I was very impressed with Bamboo Solutions and the wide range of webparts they were offering, they even have a few free ones, check them out at www.bamboosolutions.com. In addition I was given a one to one demo of K2’s new workflow product – BlackPoint. I was very impressed at how easily a complex SharePoint workflow could be created with a few mouse clicks whilst designing this in the Workflow Foundation would take thousands of lines of code.
